Why work at GiveDirectly?

At GiveDirectly, we believe people in poverty deserve the dignity to choose what they need most. That’s why we send cash, no strings attached, instead of goods or services.

Cash transfers are the most studied method of reducing poverty, with over 1,000 research studies showing that they significantly improve lives. Our approach is backed by this evidence, and we work every day to make unconditional cash transfers the norm in global aid.

Whether you’re in the field enrolling families, analyzing impact data, or scaling new programs, you’ll have the autonomy to take ownership and create real, lasting impact for recipients.

1️⃣ Recipients First

As GiveDirectly’s top organizational value, we prioritize recipient preferences over those of donors or ourselves.

But numbers only tell part of the story. Hear directly from our team about why they chose GiveDirectly or what they love about working at GiveDirectly:

Andrew Shimisa

Background: Communications

Current Role: Associate Field Manager, Content Coordination

“I love working at GiveDirectly because I believe in its mission to transform lives in a uniquely impactful way. I am impressed by how cash transfers empower recipients to take control of improving their own lives.”

Sarina Jain

Background: Research

Current Role: Program Manager, U.S. Team

“I chose to work at GiveDirectly because I was really compelled by the idea of no-strings-attached cash as an anti-poverty measure that was both proven to be effective and offered people greater choice and dignity in their lives. I also loved GD’s focus on delivering cash at speed and scale, and its goal of learning not just whether cash works but how, when, and where it works best.”

Derrick Okoth

Background: Operations

Current Role: Recruitment Associate, Global

“GD’s simple belief that the people closest to the problem are also closest to the solution hit me just as hard then as it does now. When you find a place that isn’t just about doing good but doing it right, with dignity, trust, and a healthy disregard for ‘we’ve always done it this way’ you run toward it like it’s the last bus home.”

Common FAQs

Do I need nonprofit or international development experience to apply?

It’s a nice to have, but not necessary for many of our roles. We believe your background is an asset, not a barrier. Our team is a vibrant blend of experiences from the private sector, NGOs, government, tech, education, and beyond. Whether you’re a software engineer, a researcher, a finance expert, or a seasoned humanitarian worker, we believe great ideas and impactful work come from a mix of perspectives. If you’re driven by a passion for our mission and are excited about making a real difference, you’ll find a place here.

Does GiveDirectly sponsor work visas?

As a remote-first organization, we do not currently sponsor work visas for our central support team roles unless necessary for the specific role. Employees must already have legal authorization to work in their chosen country. If you plan to work outside your country of citizenship, you’ll be responsible for ensuring you meet local work requirements.

For roles that require physical relocation, we provide administrative support to help navigate the visa process, though final approval lies with local immigration authorities.

What are the expectations around working hours and time zones?

Life doesn’t run on a 9-to-5 schedule, and neither do we. Our central support roles are fully remote first, meaning you can work from anywhere and design a workday that fits into your life. Whether that means starting early, structuring your day around school drop-offs, deep focus work, or afternoon walks, we trust you to manage your time in a way that lets you deliver impact without sacrificing balance.

To ensure we stay connected across time zones, most roles encourage at least three hours of overlap with East Africa Time (EAT). Beyond that, how and when you work is entirely up to you.
